Wright State University’s chapter – the AAUP-AFT WSU

 – welcomes all university faculty into its membership. The chapter acts as the collective bargaining agent for a single, unified bargaining unit officially formed from two previously separate units: (1) tenure-track and tenured faculty (excepting those holding certain administrative appointments at the rank of chair and higher) on both the Dayton and Celina (Lake) campuses, and (2) non-tenure-eligible “NTE” faculty (excepting those with primary appointments in the Boonshoft School of Medicine) on both the Dayton and Celina (Lake) campuses. All Wright State University faculty–adjunct faculty, faculty with administrative appointments, faculty with primary appointments in the Boonshoft School of Medicine or the School of Professional Psychology–as well as faculty in the bargaining unit described above — are cordially invited to join the AAUP-AFT WSU, as are emeritus faculty, academic professionals, and graduate students.

Why Join AAUP-AFT WSU?

The chapter invites all Wright State University faculty to join AAUP-AFT WSU, and faculty have many reasons to do so. To quote the May-June 2004 issue of AAUP’s bulletin Academe,

“Some of the most important professional challenges facing faculty members these days are coming from outside the classroom, library, and laboratory. Now, more than ever, we need to work together to defend shared values and the quality of higher education in our country.”

Members of the collective bargaining unit have even greater incentive to join AAUP-AFT WSU. Chapter members can …

  • Vote to elect chapter officers (or even serve as officers)
  • Vote to ratify any tentative collective bargaining agreement (CBA, sometimes called our contract) resulting from negotiations with the WSU administration
  • Serve on the Negotiating Team that undertakes negotiations for our CBA.

When the president of Colorado WINS learned that the president of the United States might be targeting Denver next in his anti-immigration campaign of terror, she knew how she’d begin to mobilize. One simple thing Diane Byrne does is deck out her activists in matching T-shirts. Wearing union colors promotes team spirit and builds confidence, she says. The AFT Public Employees program and policy council, meeting in New York City Feb. 5-6, abounded with tips to help locals mobilize. PPC chair Gary Feist, president of North Dakota Public Employees, recommended finding members who can tell a personal story to draw media attention. With more media on the issue, he said, legislators will become more motivated to fix the problem.

Federal immigration actions are rapidly expanding, with deadly consequences. The killings of poet Renee Nicole Good and nurse Alex Pretti by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Minneapolis have brought intense focus on the use of excessive force. An AFT webinar, co-hosted by AFT President Randi Weingarten and AFT Massachusetts President Jessica Tang on Jan. 28, featured experts on immigration and the law. It highlighted AFT resources and showcased how our locals are showing up to minimize fear and trauma.
